Sparse but effective...

Basic by today's standards. Inside the X-Ray machine building, showing the aparatus and the developing sinks.  Strange to think that most of the images you are viewing were developed into negatives and prints in these very sinks!! Carl states that the top picture is a Picker set up with a Picker table? (Picker Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio.) Ive added a picture of one in use.

Carl reliably informs me this was one of a few 'beer' parties held in the nearby woods to the camp!!

Motor Pool Ambulance Drivers

I've had some negatives from Carl for some while and although I have looked at them I have not attempted till yesterday to get them in to image format.  This is the first of a few that I have done and will upload some over the next week or so.  You will agree that this one has come out well.  Shows some of the Ambulance crew of the 279th, at the Motor Pool, with a Jeep belonging to the utilities unit behind. Carl says that the guy front and center is Pfc. Bastiano J. Russo. His name is on the windscreen of the ambulance.  He was from San Francisco area and was Italian born.  This pic has caused some conversation among the military vehicle history buffs due to the jeep markings and the red painted tops on the jerry cans on the vehicles (an un-common thing!!).

Loosing buildings

Of the 7 original buildings lets at the site when I started looking at it in 2000, we lost another one a few years back due to 'fire'. This was one of the ward buildings.  We also lost the remaining covered walkways that were installed in 1944 (and the soldiers footprint in the concrete that I found).  Not sure how long the other buildings will last.

Up for a fight and how to get away fast !!

A couple of new ones. The first one is of  Tate on the left..............Loudermilk on the right, having a bit of a spar.  This will be at Camp Bowie, Texas where the unit trained before shipping out to the UK.

The second photo is Tec/4 Anthony J. O'Connor 32139281 standing next to the parked Jeeps. Ave not yet identified the Sergeant sitting on the Harley-Davidson WLA motorbike.

New Aerial Photos

I have found a series of aerial photos taken in 1946-47 when the camp was being used as temporary accommodation by displaced civilians.

Time Off in London.

Four shots of 279th personnel having some time off. Bill Lacer is the only one identified, sitting on the grass and in the middle of the third pic. I have identified the locations as 1. In front of the treasury building, parliament square, London, opposite the Palace of Westminster (Lincoln statue is now elsewhere). 2. In the corner of St.James' Park with the lake in the background. 3. Picture taken in same place as 2, but looking the other way on to the rear of the Treasury Building and what we now know as the Cabinet War rooms, where the British government and Churchill made all their decisions in the shelters below.

New pictures in from Ansley, the grandaughter of Tec5 34686323 Robert J. Mashburn (left), with Tec5 36718343 Samuel H. Katz and Tec3 34396327 Billie B. Roberts (right). These guys are in the Laboratory Department. Some details on Mashburn below.

Robert "Bob" Mashburn was born in 1922 and raised in Hawkinsville, GA.  He married Mervin Hobbs in 1942, just a few months before he entered the Army.  He did his Army and pharmacy training in Texas (El Paso and Brownwood) during 1943 and left for Wales to join the 279th Station Hospital a few days after Christmas that year.  He was with the 279th until March 1946 in Berlin, at which time he came home to Hawkinsville and was honorably discharged from the Army.

 

Bob and Mervin had a daughter, Linda, a year after he returned and several years later they moved to Tallahassee, FL where he continued his practice as a pharmacist.  He passed away in Tallahasee in 1972 at the age of 49.  Mervin stayed in Tallahassee and passed away in 2009 at the age of 87.

Robert P. Rivers Jnr.

It is with sadness that I have the news that dear Bob Rivers passed away recently. I will remember fondly our chats and his stories of his time with the 279th. My thoughts go to his family and to Betty.

I came across these pictures recently.
These were taken in Berlin after the war when the 279th were stationed there.
These seem to be publicity shots, but show Master Sergeant Emmet Bentley andT/3 Billie Roberts in a pharmacy.
